Transforming the practical Barton detention-centre set at Port Augusta into the larger environment required by the series.
My part
On location in Port Augusta, I worked with Director Emma Freeman, the cinematographer, post-production supervisor Dave Birrell and the drone team on how the practical Barton set could become the larger environment required by the story. I reviewed art-department plans and photography, created a mock-up of the digital extension, and worked through where framing or reusable extensions could reduce the amount of CG.
For the aerial work, I proposed repeating drone passes with extras positioned in areas that would later become digital extensions, so photographed people could support the finished environment. As production progressed, I arranged for Alistair Jamieson to join and continue specialist VFX supervision, handing the work over to him and RSP’s team.
Why it mattered
The approach treated photography and visual effects as a single production problem. Decisions about framing and capture helped establish which parts of the larger environment needed to be built digitally.
